Why is McCain being regarded as if he is the savior of the republican party?

I am not aware that he is seen this way. I have heard many conservative republicans express disappointment and disenchantment with him and with President Bush. What I hear more than anything is, we need to all find a place to meet in the middle as Americans if there is any hope of us crawling out of the situation we find ourselves in today.
